Petach Tikva, Israel - While most people happily go about doing things that are not work-related or school-related during their holidays, such was not the case for one teacher and her enthusiastic 6th grade English class. When Marsha Goren, a teacher at Ein Ganim Elementary School in Petach Tikva, Israel, was told about eZedia's Zoom-ed Classroom Contest and the chance to win a new Apple e-Mac, she immediately took the initiative to gather her students, and discuss with them how they could incorporate their goal of learning English with the entering of the contest.
The classroom's goals were simple - to improve their English skills, learn more about multimedia, and create professional school presentations. Of course, the chance to win a much-needed Macintosh computer for their class, and eZediaMX software for each participant, was a huge motivating factor!
"I believe that technology is the future for children, and to involve them in as many projects
on the Internet as possible. The eZedia program may influence their futures when they need to make a professional
presentation or portfolio. They will have the technology that is necessary."
Marsha Goren, 6th grade teacher, Ein Ganim Elementary School
Marsha Goren is no stranger to incorporating technology into the curriculum. The Dream a Dream with Ein Ganim web site provides a forum for recording the dreams and wishes from school children around the world. Marsha's students are also involved with the Friends and Flags program, as well as their own road safety program. These web projects have combined classroom-learning experiences (learning English as a second language, multimedia knowledge and usage, research skills and comprehension) with global-collaboration experiences (web interaction) that allow the children to become technologically savvy, good will ambassadors.
The students researched information from books and the Internet, and also captured their own movies and graphics with a digital camera. Armed with subject-knowledge and media, the students then used eZediaMX to incorporate voice-overs, musical backgrounds, animated graphics, text effects, and movies to create media-rich presentations.
The class stated that working on the project was challenging at first, but once they became more familiar with the software, learning became fun and exciting. Helping the students with the learning process in the area of English improvement, and expanding their knowledge and skills in technology was Marsha's goal for the class.
"Once I began working [in eZediaMX,] the program became easier. Using the different buttons
helped me to make a beautiful presentation, and it became clearer to me as I went on, that this program can
be used in many ways, for a variety of purposes."
Amit Waisel, Student, Ein Ganim Elementary School
Motivated and enthusiastic, this energetic group created and submitted what became one of the three winning Zoom-ed Classroom Contest entries.
"Our hard work paid off!" said Marsha, when notified of their success. "Winning the computer will definitely be the highlight of our year! An unforgettable experience. All of the children, and I, agree that our project goals were attained. Professionally speaking, as an English teacher, I was amazed to see the effects like the recordings, the musical background, and the fantastic creativity!"
Most importantly, Marsha found that eZediaMX helped with the learning process in the area of English competency and with expanding their technological knowledge and skills. The participating students of Marsha's 6th grade class plan on teaching other students how to use eZediaMX, and how they, as a class, can benefit once the new school year begins. As well, Marsha intends on using eZediaMX as part of her English lessons for many of the different subjects that are taught in her classroom.
"The [eZediaMX] program was appealing and interesting, and it helped me to improve my technology skills, as well as my English."
Segev Rom, Student, Ein Ganim Elementary School
"Showing the world who we are was one of my main goals and the [eZediaMX] program was very beneficial in doing so."
Alon Leiberman
