Educating children about other cultures, religions, and countries can be a difficult and confusing endeavor. The many diverse customs and traditions of other societies create tremendous opportunities to teach tolerance, acceptance, and openness. However, because children are learning about countries that they've probably never visited, with cultures and customs that are foreign to theirs, the learning can be challenging.
Project-based learning allows educators to teach engaging lessons that are complex and multifaceted, with real-world scenarios. Using digital media in the learning allows the student to move beyond the confines of the classroom and immerses them in the world that they are studying.
Students begin their projects by researching, examining, and investigating other cultures through the Internet. netTrekker's curriculum-focused Internet search engine allows students to safely research their topic, providing access to high-quality teacher-approved and educationally-relevant results. Students then bring their findings to "life" by building creative interactive online presentations, using eZediaQTI. Their presentations can incorporate pictures, sounds, and videos of the culture they studied, and projects can then be shared over the Internet creating a collaborative international exchange between the researching student and other students from around the world about the researched society.
By combining netTrekker with eZediaQTI to create project-based learning, students can more clearly comprehend the connection between the assignment and the real-life scenario it mimics, making a more motivating and engaging learning environment. Educating children about other cultures and customs is important in today's world as it brings tolerance and understanding to their way of thinking. Collaborative project-based learning makes it fun.
