eZedia Supports Visual Literacy at TCEA
eZedia was honored to have Dr. Lynell Burmark signing her award-winning book, Visual Literacy: Learn to See, See to Learn, in the eZedia Booth at the Texas Computer Education Association Conference in Austin, Texas.

Dr. Burmark's book invites educators and students to examine the new landscape of literacy for the 21st Century. She argues convincingly that it is no longer enough for today's students to read and write text; they must learn to process both words and pictures. "An image-rich curriculum," writes Dr. Burmark, "can reach more students and teach them more quickly and meaningfully than traditional written student reports and text-based verbal instruction ever could." She cites the research demonstrating that humans process visual information 60,000 times faster than text, and that visual aids have been found to improve learning by up to 400%. And she offers practical tips on purposeful use of fonts and color and suggestions for "dodging PowerPoint bullets" and moving to more compelling presentation design and delivery.

A recent convert to eZedia's multimedia authoring tools (eZediaMX for presentations and eZediaQTI for one-click export to the Web or Quick-Time movies), Dr. Burmark is excited about this medium for more visual teaching and learning: "Finally, multimedia authoring that's at once easy (eZe) to use and more robust than programs costing ten to twenty times as much! Finally, a powerful, visual way for teachers to introduce new concepts and for students to demonstrate what they've learned and share their work with others! If we could reappropriate 1% of what¹s spent each year on testing products to this kind of teaching and learning tool we could change the face of American education."

Dr. Lynell Burmark, an Associate of the Thornburg Center for Professional Development since 1995, has been a classroom teacher, staff developer, and technology coordinator as well as the executive director of California's Computer Using Educators. She's a highly sought-after presenter on topics relating to powerful presentations and more visual teaching and learning. Using Graphics in eZediaMX

Graphics and photos - Graphics can be used in eZediaMX for many different things. Backgrounds, photos, maps, charts, diagrams, even interface elements such as buttons can be represented by the Graphic Object.

File formats - Graphics and photos can come in many different file formats. eZediaMX supports all popular image formats, including JPG, GIF, BMP, TIF, PSD, PNG, and many more. If you are creating graphics yourself for use in eZediaMX, it's best to use the PNG file format. PNG files have a built-in alpha channel, and this transparency is fully supported by eZediaMX. This is the best way to create buttons and custom titles for eZediaMX.

Rollover buttons - Graphic Objects can also be used to create rollover buttons. This creates a clickable object that will activate another object. Select "Rollover" in the Graphic Object's dialog box, then link it to another object to create a rollover.

Masking movies - Graphics can also be used to mask movies. This gives the movie a custom shape and transparency. For a quick mask, you can also use the Shape Object to create a shape, then mask a Movie Object with it.

To learn more about using graphics in eZediaMX, watch this 1 minute QuickTime movie on the eZediaMX Graphic Object.
